One of the innovative projects by the Community Development Department, in collaboration with the City’s Geographic Information System (GIS) team and researcher Mehdi Heris of Hunter College, involves looking at how to help reduce the urban heat effect through ‘cool roofs’. In this program, you will learn what roofs in Cambridge can do to help cool our city and improve climate resilience. Explore how measuring roof reflectivity in buildings helps inform planners and decision makers on city policies, especially those focused on zoning and heat impacts. Finally, we will look at how the heat reflectivity was measured through GIS analysis and rooftop typology with an emphasis on mapping. This event will include a presentation followed by a question-and-answer period.

This event is part of Cambridge Science Festival, a celebration showcasing the leading edge in science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM). A multifaceted, multicultural event, the Festival makes science accessible, interactive and fun, highlighting the impact of STEAM in all our lives.
