How to Dial a Memory (Main) In-Person
This installation invites visitors to learn about and interact with a piece of space-age technology. It centers on the Memory Dialer, a machine modeled after core rope memories of yesteryear - specifically the ones that held vital software for the Apollo Lunar Module when it made its first trip to the moon in 1969.
The Memory Dialer preserves the names of 20 women whose labor was instrumental in the success of the Apollo 11 Mission. Visitors will get the opportunity to use the dialer to call up the names and positions of these women, whose skills ranged from textile handcraft to engineering. Visitors can also view a short film illustrating the engineering and management endeavors behind the technology for the Apollo Lunar Module. This technology was spearheaded by Draper Labs at MIT right here in Cambridge during the Space Race.
This event is part of Cambridge Science Festival, a celebration showcasing the leading edge in science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM). A multifaceted, multicultural event, the Festival makes science accessible, interactive and fun, highlighting the impact of STEAM in all our lives.
